ABOUT OUR AREA |
|
The Inglis/Yankeetown area of southern Levy County is one
of the last waterfront gems of Central Florida and is strongly reminiscent
of Florida as it was many years ago. Located in the Big Bend section of
the Gulf Coast, Levy County is large in area (705,208 acres) yet sparsely
populated. (Under 35,000 people) The Withlacoochee River, an outstanding
Florida Waterway, forms the southern boundary and is the dividing line
between Citrus and Levy Counties. |
|
|
|
The combined population of both towns is approximately 2200 people, and is
not influenced by the tourist season. The climate here is temperate with
the average winter temperature about 65 degrees and average summer temps
around 85 degrees. Approximately 50” of rainfall per year keeps our
foliage lush and green. |
|
|
| The Withlacoochee River, one of the few rivers in the world that flows
north, is also the deepest river on the West Coast between Tarpon Springs
and Carabelle with excellent navigation to the Gulf of Mexico. |

Couple this
with the close proximity of the deactivated Cross Florida Barge Canal, the
Florida Greenways, the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Rousseau (sometimes called
the Withlacoochee Backwaters), and you open up a variety of water
recreation which includes some of the best fresh and saltwater fishing
in the southeast United States, kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving,
fishing tournaments, and Arts and Craft Festivals. |
|
|
|
|
This area of Florida also offers some of the finest hunting with the
abundance of deer, quail, turkey, ducks and wild hogs. Fishing is prime
and we have several charter captains to take you to a “Honey Hole” so you
can land and bring home your own trophy! |
|
|
| The South Levy Recreational Park, located just east of
town, provides softball and baseball fields. Local residents
contributed to the purchase of a 2 mile nature preserve along the
banks of the river and this was presented to the town of Yankeetown to
insure that the natural settings and environment would be preserved
for all to see and use. The western end of the river remains in its
natural state and appears as it did hundreds of years ago when Indians
inhabited the area. |

| Several RV camps, marinas, boat ramps and
a beach add to the recreational facilities. Many golf courses, tennis
and racket club, bowling alleys, movie theaters and two
large “Flea Markets” are located within a 25 minute drive. Major
attractions like Disney World, Busch Gardens and Sea World are less than 2
hours away. Our new Suncoast Parkway makes the drive pleasurable and
quick. |
|
|
|
|
Our economy is based on service industries, agriculture, aquaculture and
fishing. Levy County is a very large peanut producer. We also produce
seafood for the markets of North and Central Florida and provide Stone
Crabs, Clams, Shrimp, Blue Crabs and many delectable varieties of fresh
and salt water fish. These are available at local markets at prices that
will remind you of yesteryear. |

mall, several movie theaters and many fine restaurants along with local
tourist facilities. |
